The Day After – Christmas and Beyond

It’s December 26, the day after Christmas. The gifts have been given and received, the piles of paper and boxes thrown away or recycled, and the food has been eaten. The hard work is done, and the quietness settles in like a gently falling snow. It’s a good time for reflection. What comes next? What comes after Christmas? What comes on December 26 and beyond?

In preparation for Christmas, I studied some of the names of Jesus. And as I pondered his birth by reading Luke 2, I zoomed in on verse 11 where three names of Jesus jumped off of the page at me; Savior, Messiah, and Lord.

“The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!” Luke 2:11 (NLT)

Jesus is Savior – our Redeemer, the One who delivered us from our sins.

“For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” Romans 5:10

He is Messiah – the One whom God promised, our Hope.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

And He is Lord – Sovereign overall, our Master.

” Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

The day after Christmas, it’s easy to believe it’s finished. But in reality, it’s just beginning. Christmas isn’t a one-day event.  It begins and continues in our hearts as we believe in who Jesus is. He is Savior, Messiah, and Lord.  If we truly believe the baby in the manger is our Savior and Messiah, then we will surrender to Him as Lord. We will surrender to His Lordship over our lives. We will surrender our desires, our ways, our plans, and our expectations. We surrender the minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day and years of our lives with trust and obedience to Jesus Christ. Christmas continues as we remember Jesus the baby in the manger, is Lord overall.
