Monday Motivation #23 The Decision Dilemma

When was the last time you needed to make a decision or faced a dilemma that you didn’t know what the answer was? Perhaps it was a decision about a job. Or a problem with a family member. Was it a decision you needed to make about your marriage or a health issue? Were you unsure what the next step was? What did you do?

When you face a decision or dilemma and you don’t know what to do, do you:

  1. Rush ahead and hope everything turns out ok?
  2. Twiddle your thumbs and wait?
  3. Deny that the decision or dilemma exists, not solving anything or even making matters worse? or…
  4. Inquire of the LORD.

In 2 Samuel 2, Chapter 2, David had a decision to make. He had returned from a victory over the Amalekites and Saul, the man who had pursued David, was dead.  David needed to make a move and didn’t know if he should move or where he should move. But David, as imperfect as he was, was a man who was seeking God’s heart. So David did what he should do and asked the Lord.

The conversation between David and God is a good lesson for our decision making. It went like this:

After this, David asked the Lord, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?”

“Yes,” the Lord replied.

Then David asked, “Which town should I go to?”

“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.

(2 Samuel 2:1-2 NLT)

David asked and God answered. David could have rushed ahead, twiddled his thumbs, or denied his dilemma but David chose the right answer – #4, He inquired of the Lord. David knew where to find help. Notice too, that 2 Samuel 2:2-3 tells us that after God gave David an answer, then David obeyed. He and his wives, his men and their families moved to Judah and settled in the villages near Hebron.

When you have a decision or dilemma remember God’s promise “if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5) God in his wisdom and sovereignty knows what is best and gives us his wisdom and help generously and ungrudgingly. Then, our response is to obey.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own understanding;
in all your ways know him,
and he will make your paths straight.

11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and shield.
