said the ROBIN to the sparrow

Overheard In An Orchard

Said the Robin to the Sparrow

“I should really like to know,

Why these anxious human beings

Rush around and worry so?”

Said the Sparrow to the Robin,

“Friend I think that it must be

That they have no Heavenly Father

Such as cares for you and me.”

This poem by Elizabeth Cheney hangs in my mother’s house and is her favorite poem. She heard it as a child, spoken by her grandmother. It’s a sweet little poem but how sadly true. How pitiful that two little birds would observe anxious, rushing, worrying human acting like they have no one caring for them. I see the humans they describe everyday, including myself.  Many days I am anxious. Many days I rush around. Many days I am worrying about something. My guess is, you do too. Fact is, we do have a Heavenly Father that cares for us.

We are anxious because we doubt God’s care and concern. But He promises that He sees us, He hears our cries for help, He cares for us and He is concerned about us.

“The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race.  From His throne he observes all who live on earth. He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do.

Psalm 33:13-15

LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.”

Psalm 107:28-29

We rush around trying to attain things because we doubt God’s provision but He promises to provide what we need.

So don’t worry about these things, saying ‘What will we eat? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your Heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

Matthew 6:31-33

We worry because we feel limited and out of control, forgetting that GOD is sovereign and He is in control over ALL things.

O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you.”

2 Chronicles 20:6

Jesus reminds his followers that we are more valuable to God than birds and if he will take care of the little birds, we can be assured He will take care of us.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Matthew 6:25-27

God created us for a relationship with Him. We are made to love and serve Him. And that’s what we should do, while trusting Him with every detail of our life. Without being anxious, without rushing around, without worrying. Just like the birds…

My mother’s grandmother suffered from paralysis, was confined to a bed, and was barely able to speak. But she spoke this poem. I think she truly understood its meaning…like the birds.
